Dhikala Canter Safari Booking Guide

The canter is the only way to see Dhikala on a day visit. Here is how it works, what it costs and how to get a seat.

What is the Dhikala canter safari?

The Dhikala canter is a 16-seater open bus run by the Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) forest department. It is the only way for day visitors to enter the Dhikala zone, the largest and most famous part of Jim Corbett National Park. Private jeeps are allowed into Dhikala only for guests staying overnight at the forest rest houses.

The canter leaves from the CTR reception centre in Ramnagar, passes through Dhangarhi gate and drives deep into the zone to the Dhikala complex and back. The whole trip usually takes about 4–5 hours per shift. You share the vehicle with other visitors, and a forest guide rides on board.

For a Dhikala canter safari booking you need a permit from the official portal, a valid photo ID and a little luck, because seats are limited and in high demand.

Dhikala canter safari timings

There are two canter shifts a day. The canter runs longer than a normal jeep safari because of the distance: the Dhikala complex is about 51 km from Ramnagar.

WinterNov – Feb6:00 – 11:00 AM12:00 – 5:30 PM
SummerMar – Jun5:30 – 10:30 AM12:30 – 6:30 PM

Reach the reception at least 30 minutes before departure to complete ID checks. Timings move a little with sunrise and sunset, so confirm them when you book. The canter runs only while Dhikala is open, usually from 15 November to 15 June.

Dhikala canter price per seat

The canter is priced per seat, not per vehicle, which makes it the cheapest way into Dhikala for solo travellers and couples.

Dhikala canter price
VisitorApprox. price per seat
Indian national₹2,200 – ₹2,600
Foreign national₹4,500 – ₹5,500

The seat price usually covers the Dhikala permit, your seat and the on-board guide. Meals at the Dhikala canteen and your transfer to the Ramnagar reception are extra. For all other safari fees, see our Corbett safari price guide.

How Dhikala canter booking works

  1. Watch the window. Canter seats usually open about 45 days ahead for Indian visitors and 90 days for foreign nationals. Weekend and holiday seats go within hours.
  2. Keep ID details ready. Each passenger needs a valid photo ID. Accepted IDs usually include: Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving licence, PAN card, Government employee ID, Student ID (school / college), Office ID with photo. Foreign nationals must use a passport.
  3. Book and pay in full. Seats are allotted on full payment. Names and ID numbers cannot be changed later.
  4. Report at the reception. Carry the same original ID you used to book. Children should carry a school ID or birth certificate.

Read the full permit and booking rules before you book.

What you see on the Dhikala canter route

The drive itself is half the experience. A typical canter route includes:

  • Dhangarhi gate: the entry point to the zone, with a small interpretation centre and museum nearby.
  • Sal forest: tall, dense sal stands where you may see sambar, barking deer and langurs.
  • The Ramganga river: the road follows the river for long stretches. Watch for elephants, gharials, mugger crocodiles and fish eagles.
  • Gairal: a riverside rest house where the forest opens up.
  • Dhikala chaur: the vast grassland in front of the Dhikala complex, with herds of chital and hog deer, and the best chance of a tiger in the open.
  • High Bank: a viewpoint over the Ramganga, good for elephants, otters and river birds.

You will usually get a short break at the Dhikala complex, where the canteen sells simple food and tea.

Morning or afternoon canter?

The morning canter starts in the cold and dark in winter, but it catches the forest when animals are most active and the light over the Ramganga is soft. The afternoon canter is warmer and easier for families. It spends the late afternoon on the grasslands, when deer herds move out to graze and tigers sometimes follow. If you can only do one, most naturalists pick the morning shift from November to February and either shift from April to June, when the heat pushes animals to the river all day.

Wildlife you may see

Beyond tigers, Dhikala is one of the best places in India to watch wild Asian elephants, often in herds of twenty or more on the river bed. Look for chital, hog deer and sambar on the chaur, gharials and mugger crocodiles basking on the sandbanks, and birds such as the Pallas’s fish eagle, great hornbill and stork-billed kingfisher. In winter, flocks of ducks and waders gather on the reservoir.

If you are a group of five or six, a jeep in Bijrani may cost about the same as canter seats. If you are one or two people and want to see Dhikala, the canter is excellent value.

Tips for your Dhikala canter safari

  • Try for a seat near the front or on the side facing the river for better views.
  • Carry layers. Winter mornings in an open canter are very cold, often under 8°C at dawn.
  • Pack water, a light snack and a cap. Do not feed animals or leave litter.
  • Keep voices low. A quiet canter sees more wildlife.
  • Binoculars help a lot on the wide Dhikala grasslands.
  • If canter seats are gone, try a Bijrani or Jhirna jeep safari instead.
