Jim Corbett travel tips: packing by season

The best Jim Corbett travel tips start with the weather. Open jeeps are cold at dawn in winter and hot by afternoon in May, so what you pack changes a lot by month. Check our best time to visit guide for what each season is like for wildlife.

SeasonWhat to pack
Winter
Nov – Feb
Thermal inner layer, fleece or sweater, a windproof jacket, gloves, a woollen cap, warm socks and a thermos for hot tea. Morning safaris can feel close to freezing in an open jeep.
Summer
Mar – Jun
Wide-brim sun hat, light full-sleeve cottons, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, a reusable water bottle and electrolyte sachets. A light layer is still handy for the early start.
Monsoon
Jul – Oct
Rain jacket or poncho, quick-dry clothes, a dry bag or rain cover for your camera, spare socks and shoes with grip. Only a few zones stay open, so plan around them.

Year-round essentials

  • The original photo ID used for your safari booking, plus a copy of the permit on your phone.
  • A small day pack that fits on your lap in the jeep.
  • A power bank, charging cables and a universal adapter.
  • A torch or headlamp for early starts and rest-house nights.
  • Tissues, wet wipes and a zip bag for your litter.

Pack soft bags rather than hard suitcases if you are staying inside the reserve, as space in jeeps is tight.

What to wear on safari

  • Colours: khaki, olive, brown, beige or grey. Skip red, white and neon.
  • Shoes: closed, comfortable shoes or trainers. You climb in and out of a high jeep.
  • Dust cover: a scarf, buff or mask. Tracks are very dusty from March to June.
  • Layers: easy to remove as the day warms up, rather than one heavy jacket.
  • Cap and sunglasses: useful in every season except the darkest winter mornings.

Camera and binocular tips

You do not need professional gear to enjoy Corbett, but a little preparation helps:

  • A zoom of about 200–400 mm (or a bridge camera with a long zoom) covers most mammals and larger birds. Birders may want more reach.
  • A small bean bag rests the lens on the jeep frame far better than a tripod, which is impractical in a Gypsy.
  • Carry spare batteries and memory cards. Charging points can be limited, especially in forest rest houses.
  • Keep the flash off. It is not allowed on animals and rarely helps at distance.
  • Binoculars of 8×42 or 10×42 are ideal for birds and distant deer. One pair per two people is a good minimum.
  • Use a dust cover or a simple cloth over the camera between sightings.

Health and safety on the trip

  • Motion sickness: forest tracks are bumpy and winding. Take medicine before the safari if you are prone to it.
  • Water: drink bottled or filtered water and carry your own on safari. There are few places to refill inside zones.
  • Insects: use repellent, especially at dusk and in the monsoon.
  • First aid: a small kit with plasters, antiseptic, pain relief, antacids, ORS and your regular medicines.
  • Medical help: Ramnagar has government and private hospitals and clinics, and larger hospitals are in Haldwani and Kashipur. Ask your hotel for the nearest option on arrival.

Money, ATMs and mobile network

Ramnagar has several bank ATMs, and UPI is widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops. Still, carry some cash for guide fees, tips, roadside tea stalls and small village shops, where network can drop just when you need to pay.

Mobile coverage inside the safari zones is patchy, and in places like Dhikala or deeper rest houses it can disappear for hours. Download offline maps, save booking confirmations and your permit to your phone, and let family know your plans before you enter the park. Resorts along the Kosi usually have better signal and Wi-Fi.

If you depend on your phone for work, pick a resort that confirms Wi-Fi in advance, and plan calls for the middle of the day between safaris. A second SIM from a different network can help, as coverage varies by operator around Ramnagar.

Travelling with kids and seniors

Morning safaris start early and can be very cold in winter, so dress children and older travellers in extra layers and bring a blanket. The afternoon shift is often more comfortable for them.

Rides are bumpy. Anyone with back or neck problems should sit towards the front of the jeep, and may find one safari a day enough. Up to 2 children aged 5–12 can join 6 adults in one jeep. Canter safaris to Dhikala are long, about half a day, which can be tiring for small children.

Pack snacks, water and a change of clothes for children, and keep them busy with a simple checklist of birds and animals to spot. For seniors, choose a stay with ground-floor rooms and short transfers to the gate, and carry any regular medicines in a day bag rather than the main luggage.

Budget tips and holiday rush

  • Share a jeep: the permit is per vehicle, so six people pay far less each than two.
  • Book early for weekends, Christmas–New Year, Holi, Diwali and summer school holidays. Permits and good rooms sell out.
  • Stay midweek. Resort rates are often lower from Monday to Thursday.
  • Choose a stay close to your zone’s gate to save on transfers.
  • Mix one comfortable resort night with a simpler hotel night in Ramnagar to balance the budget.
  • Ask what the resort rate includes. Meals, safari pickup and taxes are often extra.
  • Travel by train to Ramnagar if you are coming from Delhi. See how to reach Jim Corbett for routes.

A simple 2-day Corbett plan

  1. Day 1, morning: Reach Ramnagar by train or road and check in near the Kosi.
  2. Day 1, afternoon: Afternoon jeep safari in Bijrani, Jhirna or Dhela. Evening by the river or a bonfire at your resort.
  3. Day 2, dawn: Morning safari in a different zone for variety. Back for a late breakfast.
  4. Day 2, late morning: Visit Garjia Devi temple or Corbett Falls, then head home after lunch.

Shift times change through the year, so match this plan to the current Corbett safari timings.
